FS&R - Child Rape on Screen - When is Enough, Enough?

Well, you might have heard by now that Dakota Fanning will appear in a new movie called Hounddog
where she'll prance around "semi-naked" and will be involved in a few rape scenes. She and her mother
are apparently thrilled about all of this and think the role might land her an Oscar nomination.
Ain't that just peachy.
Is this where we as a society have come? Hollywood is so desperate for shock value that it has no problem
sticking a 12-year-old on screen in panties and filming her being raped? All for a chance at an award or
two? Am I the only one who has a bit of a problem with this?
Look, I know disgusting stuff like this happens in real life, but why on earth would I want to see it
portrayed in a movie? Is it really going to help anybody understand the subject matter? My fear is that
it'll attract a bunch of sick, pedophile freaks who'll actually get off on it. If I had a daughter I would
NOT want her half-naked in a movie, knowing that somewhere there was some sicko who was enjoying the
sight. How about you?
The scenes are apparently of such a nature that one film crew member says many adult females would have
"balked" at the role. Does this not send up the ol' red flag?
There are plenty of people who will praise Dakota for her "bravery" and will most likely call this a "gutsy"
role, but I say that nothing good can come from watching a child get raped in a movie. That's not entertaining.
That's not uplifting. That doesn't open up any sort of discourse. Who wants to watch that? Who NEEDS to
watch it?
What do they want to accomplish here? An Oscar nomination for Fanning? A means of gaining controversy and
publicity? Sorry, but I don't get it.
I have to call "exploitative" on this one and just pray that the sickos don't show up en masse. Dakota's only
12, so I wonder who truly was the driving force behind her taking this role. Who's really the one desperate to
get her an Oscar?
I don't want to see a precedent set here. Just flash some text that says "Rape and pedophilia is bad,"
and you've gotten the point across. Little kids then get to keep their clothes on, normal moviegoers don't
have to worry about being disturbed, and the degenerates aren't given material for their warped minds to
digest.
If you have a different take then feel free to share it. After all, this is just my opinion; you could be
wrong.

On Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 2:04:17 PM Laslo Hollyfeld mused: It sounds to me like Dakota Fanning's mom should get together with Britney Spears' Mom and Jessica Simpson's Dad and form a "creepy parent of a famous child" support group. |
On Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 10:53:39 PM Retard mused: This shouldn't come as a surprise. America loves to sexualize children. Fanning and mom are just symptoms of a greater problem. |
On Friday, August 11, 2006 at 7:47:53 AM AustralianAnn mused: I don't want to judge a movie before seeing but I will anyway. They could show the rape after the fact (or even a scream behind closed doors). It can be just as effective to get the point across.
However, I think the scene with Foster in 'The Accused' really opened a lot of eyes and I don't know that I was against it being filmed that way.
If done well, it can work. Such as in the NZealand film, "Once Were Warriors" but I have to agree wtih Johnny. There will be sickos who enjoy it and, therefore, I don't think we need to see it. |
On Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 9:13:33 PM Prude in Jacksadelphia mused: Taste is absent of Hollywood, but people will see the film. It may win an oscar and we will likely continue with similar conversations about moral turdburgers in tinseltown. (thanks for the word, Johnny, my new fave.) |
On Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 6:32:40 PM Spider-Lou mused: This is a prime example of Hollywood sleazebags finally choosing to put kiddie-porn in the mainstream, and it's poor Dakota who will suffer for it. This will be the catalyst of this child ending up in rehab far too many times. |
