OVERVIEW
|
Max Payne is once again plunged into the world of crime. This time he's
investigating the Cleaners, a group of hired killers that are taking out other
crime bosses. Several other characters from the first game return. Great action
and cheesy dialog ensue.

MR. SHADE'S TAKE
|
The
original Max Payne was the first to use "bullet time" which is what made it a big hit.
Bullet time is where the game slows down but you are still able to aim and fire
in real time. Since then we have had dozens of games try it (Dead
to Rights, True Crime, Bond: Everything or Nothing, etc.) but none of them have
done it as well as the original. The sequel, however, is actually able to
improve upon it and make it an integral part of the game.
Gameplay
is king with this game. The graphics, sound, and story are all up
to par with other third person shooters, but the gameplay is what separates it
from the rest of the pack. Using good camera angles, this game plays more like a
FPS and this helps out with the action. You'll basically work your way through
hordes of thugs on every level using your typical assortment of weapons -
pistols, automatic rifles, grenades, etc. While the AI is limited to either
charging you or standing back and shooting, this never becomes an issue because
of level design. The levels are mostly made up of small rooms with items to
hide behind. This leads to plenty of shoot-outs with multiple enemies hiding
behind boxes or walls and you using rolls and bullet time to take them out.
This game is all-out action so you pretty much go in "guns a blazin'" all the
time.
Probably the biggest improvements from the original are the nightmare levels.
In the original game you had to follow a blood trail and then do some crappy
platform jumping with instant deaths if you fell. In the sequel, the nightmare
levels have you running around different areas that you have already visited in
the game. These levels occur when you have gone to sleep or you have been
knocked out. It's basically you confronting your conscious to advance the story
and character development. It's very well done and it's actually fun this time
around since you can't be killed.
Another cool addition to the sequel is the police station level. After the
first chapter you start in your police station and you basically run around
talking to people or listening to their conversations. There are a couple of cops
watching TV in the break room and if you turn off the TV they start yelling at
you. Pretty funny. This area was a lot of fun and a nice break from the action.
They should have added some more areas like this to bump up the length of the
game.
The
dialog in this game is just as cheesy as the first. You get stuff
like "Shooting a gun is a binary choice - you either shoot it or you don't." It
goes along with the comic book feel to the game so it's not too distracting and
it's humorous in parts, so I won't bash it too much. The only real complaint I
have (other than the length) is that the only difficulty level is normal. This
didn't bother me because the normal difficulty was perfect for me, but gamers
looking for more challenge will have to win the game at least once to get to
the harder difficulties.
If you like action games then this is a must play title. It's fast-paced with a
cool lead character and good weapons. While the story is pretty standard and
clichéd, it is enough to keep you interested and wanting to finish the game.
Even people who don't normally like shooters should try this one - a rental
should easily give you enough time to finish the game. I can only recommend
purchasing this game to hardcore gamers who will play through the game multiple
times.

Visually everything looks OK - nothing really stands out. The character
animations are well done and the bullet time looks great. |

Voice acting is good, even if the characters seem a little overdone. Uses the
same music from the first game. |

Not much here, but the level designs make up for it. |

This is where the game really shines - this is how bullet time should be done. |

There's not much here except for higher difficulties. There might also be a few
conversations you missed the first time through. |
