THE THEATER
|
You really can't go wrong seeing a movie at Cordova Cinema. It's the 2nd best theater in Memphis, and it
really isn't far behind The Paradiso. In fact, I prefer it to
The Paradiso because it's closer to me. And since it's one of the newer theaters in
Memphis, there's the added bonus of it still being clean and state-of-the-art. Some of the older theaters have
just ceased to care.
However, be prepared to deal with a lot of teenagers running around thinking they're cool. I've heard people
complain in the past about "too many kids" hanging around at particular theaters, but I have yet to see the
kids kill anybody. And as long as they're not ruining my movie experience then it doesn't really bother me. If they
get out of hand I just give 'em the ol' shoulder bump and the "Johnny Betts glare" and that sets 'em straight.
Not surprisingly, ticket prices are on the high-end of the spectrum, but that's the price you pay for a
top-of-the-line movie experience. But hey, your money gets you some comfortable seats and leg room. No
more having to worry about your knees pressed against the seat in front of you.

WHAT SETS IT APART
|
- Great screens and sound. Pretty much on par with The Paradiso.
- Excellent location in the middle of Germantown Rd.
- Accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
- The Cordova has reported the most Johnny Betts sightings.

SMALL - $3.00 |
MEDIUM - $3.50 |
LARGE - $4.00 |
| Drinks: |

MEDIUM - $3.25 |
LARGE - $3.50 |

Here's a little bit of breaking news for you... THE CONCESSIONS ARE NOT CHEAP! Folks, there is a Walgreens
and the Dollar Shoppe in the same shopping center. Do yourself a favor and head over to one of them for
snacks and sneak 'em in. Why inflict unnecessary damage to your bank account?

WHAT'S NEARBY
|
Want to eat or shop somewhere before or after the movie? Here are your best (i.e. closest) options:
Abner's - They have GREAT chicken strips, and the
prices are very reasonable (two can eat for around $10 or cheaper). It's in the same shopping center as
the theater, and you can walk to it from the theater in about 2 minutes. I highly recommend sneaking some
of this in.
The Dollar Shoppe - Everything's a dollar! This is great if you want to do a little
birthday shopping for your family after the movie. Seriously, they'll never know. I guess the fact that they
spell "shop" as "shoppe" means it's cooler and classier than The Dollar Tree. But to be honest, I have yet to
feel any positive effects from the extra "pe."
Marble Slab Creamery - I hear they have good ice cream with
a wide variety of flavors, but I also hear that they're pretty expensive. I can just waltz on over to Schnucks
and buy a gallon of ice cream for about the cost of a cone at the Slab.
O'Charley's - They claim to be at the Corner of Good Food
and Good Times, but I could find neither of those street names on a Memphis map. In fact, a more accurate
description would be, "Right off of Germantown Rd." Oh well, I guess that doesn't have quite the same ring.
Good food, but they're not cheap. Unless you're buying a sandwich or a burger, then you can expect to pay close
to $10 or more per meal.
Quizno's - Well, they have good subs, but they're not really
worth it unless you have a coupon. Last time I had a coupon I still ending up paying about $10 for two people!
Sheridan's Frozen Custard - To be honest, I
can't really tell the difference between frozen custard and ice cream. It's good, but you can expect to pay
over $3 per person. McDonald's has sundaes for $1. Which do you think ol' Johnny's gonna go with?
Walgreens - Very handy if you're dying for some candy but
don't want to contribute to the racketeering going on in regard to movie concessions. Be sure to check out
their coupons (usually found at the front of the store). They usually have discounts on candy.

THE GIST
|
Cordova Cinema is the second best theater in Memphis. It's in a safe location off of Germantown Rd., and it
is surrounded by plenty of eating and shopping options. The screens are large, the sound is top-notch, and the
seats offer plenty of legroom. Plus, THERE ARE CUP HOLDERS! If you're trying to decide whether to see a movie
at Cordova or The Paradiso then I would recommend seeing it at whichever you're closest
to. Quality-wise, there really isn't much difference.
Make sure you tell them Johnny Betts sent you. They'll probably kick you out of the theater, but it'll be something
to remember.
