THE THEATER

The Majestic was actually a pretty good theater when it originally opened a few years ago. It was the first theater to offer stadium seating in Memphis, thus making it the theatrical equivalent of BBQ around here. We were so accustomed to theaters no better than the entertainment room of a large house in Germantown that the Majestic was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, that air has since grown stale.

The area of town around the Majestic isn't exactly the safest at dark, and a 2003 article in The Commercial Appeal mentioned how a lot of cars in The Majestic parking lot were broken into - 18 cars during a Bad Boys 2 screening if what one person told me is true.

As for the theater itself, well, it's outdated. For example, the seats are old and well past their comfort prime. I'm pretty sure there was vomit on the seat next to me recently. Excuse me for being picky, but when I'm at the theater I like to lean my head back on the seat without worrying what my hair might be touching. There's nothing more unsettling than touching a movie seat and coming away with a film of grease on your finger. And my seat almost broke when I sat in it. Folks, I'm 6'1" and a lean, mean 195 lbs, so movie seats shouldn't be breaking when I sit in them.

I know people who live near the Majestic, yet rather than see a movie there, they prefer to drive to another theater regardless of the distance. They grasp any opportunity they can find to get away from the area for awhile. You might want to keep that in mind.

WHAT SETS IT APART

  • It's near Best Buy and some great restaurants.
  • Vomit seats. I didn't say this set it apart in a *good* way.
  • Accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
  • Free refills on large, overpriced drinks.
  • Hearing devices.
  • One of the most dangerous theaters in Memphis. This could be good for a Halloween movie if you want a little extra scare.

WHAT'S NEARBY

Want to eat or shop somewhere before or after the movie? Here are your best (i.e. closest) options:

Best Buy - The one-stop source for all your home entertainment needs. Or so they would have you believe.

Chick-Fil-A - They've got the best chicken sandwiches around. Sure, you'll pay $4 to $5 for a meal, but you'll get your money's worth. Amazingly, the employees are some of the most efficient and courteous in the fast food business. But remember, they are NOT open on Sundays.

Fazoli's - Their Submarinos are absolutely the best sub sandwiches in town. They're big too. They're Nicole Kidman to Subway's Tom Cruise. Oh, and the topper - FREE BREADSTICKS! We're talking so-soft-because-they're-drenched-in-butter cardiac sticks. They so rule.

Half-Shell - I have yet to find any compelling reason to eat here, but Stephanie claims it's decent.

Huey's - A Memphis original. If you want a fun, party-like atmosphere then this is a good choice. However, if you're looking for good value then you might want to keep looking. The hamburgers are decent but they're not worth the $6 price tag.

Hops - I've never eaten here. The main reason being they charge $7 for a burger. No thanks.

K-Mart - They're desperate for business these days. I guess Wal-mart's puttin' the hurt on 'em. It's a good place to go if you want a little peace and quiet. And free coffee.

Olive Garden - The prices are fairly reasonable for an Italian restaurant, but you can still expect to pay between $20 and $30 for two. I highly recommend the Black Tie Mousse Cake.

On the Border - This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant in Memphis, but I think it's been replaced by La Hacienda. Warning - be wary of the water. It tastes like it's from a hose. I guess they're going for that authentic Mexican feel.

Pig 'N Whistle - Memphis BBQ. It's been a long time since I've had it, so I don't have much to say.

Red Sun - One of the best Chinese buffets. They have a huge selection of food at a good price. Make sure you try the peanut butter chicken.

Ruby Tuesday - It's pretty good, but the value-for-your-money ratio is too low unless you have a coupon.

Smokey Bones - Most Memphians refuse to believe that any BBQ other than Corky's exists, but Smokey Bones is quickly making a name for itself. After your beef brisket sandwich, give the fried doughnuts a try.

THE GIST

Other than a free screening, I really can't find any compelling reason to see a movie at the Majestic. Unless you just like looking for your flak jacket before heading to the movies.

If you decide to chance it, then DON'T tell 'em Johnny Betts sent you because I want NO part of that life-risking adventure.
