MOVIE HORROR STORIES

Cinderfella
by Maria E.

My husband and I saw Cinderella Man and loved it! As we were leaving the theater, I said to my husband, "I'm going to bring your dad -- he'll LOVE this movie!" And I thought to myself how this 80-year-old man would be able to (1) relate to the depression era (having lived through it) and (2) recollect the wonderful story of JJ Braddock's rise from obscurity to be the World Heavyweight Champ ... So I invite Steve on a date, which he accepts, and I take him to the movie. And, as we are sitting in the theater, and the movie begins, you know, it begins with the typed words from Runyon's Cinderella Man quote, Steve leans over and says, in a LOUD voice (he's not just a little deaf), "Is this the one about the guy that wins the Heavyweight Championship??" All seven people in the movie theater heard his question.

Then upon leaving, he said "Well, of all the movies we could have seen ... that was the last one I would have chosen." Then it dawned on me that on our way in to the theater 2 1/2 hours earlier, I had pointed to the marquee, and consequently, this man had been expecting something along the lines of Cinderella as in the real fairy tale -- not a depression era, ultra-real boxing flick. Not exactly a "dream date."

Johnny: My main question is why would an 80-year-old man prefer a movie like Cinderella over Cinderella Man?

Moral of the Story: The elderly can sometimes get easily confused. Never underestimate the power of over-clarification.

Send your stories to me and let the whole world know just how dangerous going to the movies can be.
