MOVIE HORROR STORIES

Mentally Challenged Part 1
by Johnny Betts

"Rumble in the Bronx" will probably go down as the most memorable Jackie Chan movie I've ever seen at the theater. Not because it's Jackie Chan's best, no, this is a movie I'll never forget because of the people who sat in the row in front of us.

My friend and I had chosen to sit behind an empty row. "More peace," we figured. Weeeeell, right before the movie started, a group of "mentally challenged" people walked in and took the entire row in front of us. I'm not referring to a group of movie critics here; they were actually a mentally handicapped group. There were about 12 of them, and they had 2 supervisors sitting on the ends.

No offense to the mentally handicapped, but this group made the movie less than an enjoyable experience. It was annoying enough that they talked at a normal "speaking voice" the entire movie, but the worst was there was this one guy, whenever a good looking girl would show up on screen, he'd start laughing *really* loud. It was loud, and it was *long.* I don't want to sound mean, but the best way to describe the laugh is it sounded like somebody was machine-gunning a seal. And the supervisors did nothing to curb any of this! Until...

An old guy (he was at least in his 60s) stood up, turned around (so now he's facing me), and just started rubbing himself all over. Dude was going at it briskly. After taking about 5 seconds to recover from the shock I'd been thrown in, I turned to my friend and asked, "How do I even react to this?" It's pretty hard to ignore something like that when it's right in your face. I started to try to think of ways to nonchalantly leap frog a few rows backwards when FINALLY one of the supervisors got the guy to sit down.

Thankfully, that ended up being the worst of it, but I was pretty much on edge the rest of the movie. It's kind of strange when there is more tension inside the theater than there is on screen. And it took a long time before I went to see a Jackie Chan movie at the theaters again.

Moral of the Story: Love those who are mentally-challenged. Hug them, spend time with them, and donate to their charities. But don't feel guilty if you choose not to sit behind them at the movies.

Send your stories to me and let the whole world know just how dangerous going to the movies can be.
