Saving Seats
by Dennis G.

I hate saving seats for people. I'm not talking about holding ONE seat for my wife while she gets the popcorn; I'm talking about one person wanting to save multiple seats.

A couple of years ago, we went to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Being opening night, we figured the theater would be packed, which it was. Therefore, we naturally got to the theater early enough to assure a decent seat, which we got. While settling in, a young woman came and stood in the middle of the row in front of us and proceeded to try and claim the ENTIRE row for her friends, none of which were in the theater. She was doing fine for about a minute until a large group of people ignored her and filled up most of the row.

At this point, the scene turned ugly as the young woman began a profanity-laden tirade aimed at the "rude and insensitive" people who "stole" the seats. Everyone in the immediate vicinity started watching the action unfold with considerable amusement, myself included. For their part, the "seat stealers" wisely stood their ground, reminding the young woman that it wasn't realistic for one person to try and save an entire row - especially on opening night.

Visibly upset, the young woman was forced to leave the remaining seats as some of her friends finally wandered into the theater. They ended up taking seats on the second row from the screen - with many of the other theater-goers applauding and chuckling all the while. Our amusement was met by the young woman standing up from the second row and giving the entire theater the finger.

Johnny: I've never had to save more than three or four seats. That's about all I can handle. I don't have it in me to save an entire row. Mr. Shade doesn't even have it in him to save ONE seat! Hey Shade, can you save my seat please? "BUT I'M SO SCARED! What if there's confrontation??? I CAN'T HANDLE IT!" Wuss. Now back to Dennis with the moral of this story...

Moral of the Story: The Moral? While you have to admire her resilience, this woman clearly did not understand the rules associated with saving seats. If you're planning on a large crowd, you need to send in more than one person to save seats. Bring coats, purses, etc. to place on the seats as a visual signal for the rest of us. Better yet, don't worry about all sitting together. After all, are you there to watch a movie or have a conversation?

Send your stories to me and let the whole world know just how dangerous going to the movies can be.
