Movie Minutiae - Damon the Hero?

When you hear someone referred to as a "hero" what kind of attributes come to mind? Courage in the face
of danger? Strength in a time of crisis? The ability to overcome a handicap and achieve great things?
Maybe you think about a firefighter breaking through a burning building to save a small child. Or maybe
you think back to 1944 and how our brave soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy. Perhaps you're feeling
a little spiritual and you reflect on a man dying on a cross. Oh, I know, how about a man sprinkling water from
his sports bottle on a woman who fainted? Yeah, that last one doesn't quite cut it for me either.
But according to IMDb.com, Matt Damon is supposedly a hero
because he was out jogging one day and ran to the aid of a woman lying on the street. The story says she
had fainted due to the heat, and Damon sprinkled some water on her face and hands. Shortly afterwards, a
friend of the woman came to help her home, but not before Damon signed some autographs and posed for
pictures.
Now don't get me wrong, I give Damon credit for stopping to help the poor lady, but were his actions really
"heroic"? Heroes typically make some sort of sacrifice or overcome some great obstacle. The woman must not
have been in that bad of shape if her friend was able to help her home and there was no need for an ambulance.
If Damon had climbed down a well to retrieve some water, climbed back up the well, and then ran a few
miles uphill to revive the woman, then I may be willing to grant the guy hero status. But all he did
was SPRINKLE WATER ON HER!
If you or I did the same thing we'd be lucky to get a "thank you" let alone an article written about the
event. At worst we'd get a reprimand if it caused us to be late to work. I'm all for celebrities doing
good deeds and helping their fellow man, but come on, let's be realistic and treat them no differently than
anybody else. Matt Damon's a good Samaritan? Sure. But a hero? No more than you or I.
I'm surprised the article didn't claim he started walking on the water that he had sprinkled on the lady.
"Man, Johnny, why so harsh??" Hey, be glad I didn't claim it was all a publicity stunt for
The Bourne Supremacy. I could have gone there,
but I didn't. I'm just keeping everything balanced, folks. This is just my opinion, you could be wrong.
