PLOT

Jodie Foster is a mom flying back to her parents' home in New York from Germany with her 6 year-old daughter, and her husband in a coffin. Foster knows all about planes – she designs aircraft engines. And this plane is impressive: two stories, brand new and full of luxury. Foster falls asleep, and when she wakes up – her daughter isn't in the seat next to her. After looking around and asking about her, she gets more and more panicked. Foster gets the Captain and the entire flight crew searching the plane for her child, but more and more evidence points that Foster's nuts. Jodie Foster in another thriller ensues.

KENDA'S TAKE

I hate giving out spoilers in a review ... so I promise I won't give out more than the trailers did.

Flightplan starts out a little slow, but it builds upon itself perfectly and doesn't wait too long to get into the story. Refreshing in being realistic and plausible, the movie flows well through the different aspects of drama, suspense, thriller, and action and keeps you in the loop without giving away too much.

Foster is an excellent actress and extremely believable and human. I took notice of Peter Sarsgaard in the Skeleton Key and he is just as great in this – playing the calm, collected personality against Foster's anxiety ridden character. Sean Bean also plays a great counterpart to Foster.

ODDS & ENDS

  • Johnny wasn't able to screen this film because, well, it wasn't screened in Memphis.

  • Johnny feels that even though he hasn't seen this movie yet he can still contribute some odds and ends.

  • Johnny thanks Kenda for contributing this review.

  • Director Robert Schwentke is best known for being a German director who isn't Uwe Boll.

  • Sean Bean and Peter Sarsgaard both admit to being afraid of flying.

  • Johnny isn't really afraid of flying, but he prefers driving when possible.

  • Jodie Foster was in Panic Room with Dwight Yoakam who was in Sling Blade with J.T. Walsh who was in Gang in Blue with Josh Brolin who was in Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon.
MAMA'S APPROVAL

Hardly any profanity, just violence and suspense -- any mother's gonna feel for Foster frantically searching for her daughter. Oh, if you have any flying anxiety, I suggest you skip this one. There are some fights, punches, falling, and an explosion (yes, someone blows up) that are very tame but while Mama would be fine, leave the younger kids at home.

TRAILER COMPARISON

I really feel like I got EXACTLY what the trailer advertised. If the trailer piqued your interest, you should like the movie.

THE GIST

Very satisfying thriller/suspense.
