PLOT
|
It's just after the end of "Shrek," and Shrek and his new bride, Fiona, are invited to visit her parents.
But you see, this isn't just any "meeting the in-laws for the first time" visit. Fiona's parents just
happen to be the King and Queen of Far Far Away. Oh, and they are expecting Fiona to be cured of her
curse and married to Prince Charming. When Shrek and Fiona's dad behave very, very badly at dinner,
Shrek and Fiona fight.
Of course, they aren't at all pleased to find out the truth. You see, Fiona's father made a deal with
the Fairy Godmother, and she's not at all pleased, being that Prince Charming is her son and now won't
inherit the throne. So Fiona's dad hires the most vicious hitman he can find - the only one willing to
take on an ogre. Pooss. Eeen. Boots. (no really, you MUST say it like that). Of course, Pooss. Eeen.
Boots. quickly realizes Shrek isn't a bad ogre and joins his side. Together, Shrek, Donkey and Pooss.
Eeen. Boots. visit the Fairy Godmother (not realizing she is the evil behind it all) to try to find a
way to make everything all right. Animated hilarity ensues.

MS. CALI'S TAKE
|
I really didn't even want to see this movie, because I absolutely hated "Shrek." But that's what the group
wanted to do that night, and if my group jumped off a cliff, I'd probably do it too (I'd just let them all
go first to make the fall shorter). So go to "Shrek 2" I did. And I liked it! I really liked it. The movie
is actually funny! By far, the best is Pooss. Eeen. Boots., brilliantly played by Antonio Banderas. He
stole the movie with his cute little accent, and his adorable "puppy" eyes, and his hysterical coughing
up of the hairball. Also, the more subtle comedy (like the fact that Far Far Away looked JUST like
Beverly Hills, and all the women went shopping at Saxon Fifth Avenue) was better in this one. Mike Myers
wasn't over the top (for once). And Donkey wasn't annoying (much).
What I didn't like: The music in this one was a bit dated - Fairy Godmother's version of "Holding Out For
A Hero" was cool (I LOVE Footloose!), but it's old enough to be retro, so it worked. They could certainly
have picked a much better song for the group karaoke at the end than "Livin' La Vida Loca" though. And
the original numbers weren't really catchy.

MAMA'S APPROVAL
|
Would Johnny's mama like it? I don't see why not! Children? My friend's 2-year-old son watches "Shrek" at
LEAST once or twice a day. He just started really talking within the past few months, and one of the first
multi-word things he said was "IbelieveIbelieveIbelieveIbelieve. I! BELIEVE! I! BELIEVE! I BELIEVE!" (from
the Karaoke special feature at the end of the "Shrek" DVD). She didn't think he'd really get the sequel
as much though. However, there's nothing in it that is objectionable for children, and there's enough to
keep them entertained and laughing. So go ahead and bring them along if you must. Although, if you are
going to the 8:40 PM show, and your kids normally go to bed at 8, and you sit right in front of me, don't
be surprised if I give you evil glares as your kid loudly begs to go home and go to bed throughout the
entire movie.

TRAILER COMPARISON
|
I didn't particularly want to see "Shrek 2," so I never really paid any attention to the trailers. But it
surpassed my expectations, so I would say it's a good idea to keep an open mind, even if you don't particularly
care for the trailer - you might just be surprised!

THE GIST
|
"Shrek 2" is a surprisingly enjoyable movie (okay, probably only surprising for me, as I am the only
person in the entire world who could not find one good thing to say about the first movie). It's fun and
funny. What more could you want?
