PLOT
|
The sun is dying. A team of astronauts, members of the Icarus project, are sent to re-ignite it. Their mission, essentially, is to create a star within a star.
A bunch of weird stuff goes down. That's it. Seriously, that's about as spoiler-free as I can make the plot summary. Quite the mixed bag ensues.

JOHNNY'S TAKE
|
Artistic. Visually aesthetic. Unique. All words to describe the inimitable Johnny Betts. But they can also be used to describe the first 2/3rds of Sunshine.
The film begins as an interesting presentation of bright, contrasting colors, askew camera angles, and striking visuals. It's not every day you see a body freeze in
a temperature of -270 degrees Celsius and then shatter into thousands of bloody red pieces.
But then the third act arrives, along with a plot twist from way out in left field, and we're presented an element that simply was not needed. The film lost me and,
judging people's reactions afterwards, the rest of the viewing audience as well. This is not a case of the film boasting an intelligence level so high that only the
most astute observers will "get it." The problem is it attempts to saturate us with way too much, way too quickly. There is no time to digest anything. Chances are
you'll be too busy wondering, "Wait, why isn't he burning up right now?"
It's a shame, really. Sunshine started off with such promise. If I were really lame then I'd say something like, "Sunshine started brightly, but
unfortunately by the 3rd act it was enveloped in darkness," but you can always trust that I will not stoop to such levels.

ODDS & ENDS
|
- I'm not really in the mood to find a bunch of Odds & Ends, sorry.
- Troy Garity was in Milwaukee, Minnesota with Josh Brolin who was in Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon.

MAMA'S APPROVAL
|
Violence is minimal, and profanity consists of a handful of "f" bombs.

TRAILER COMPARISON
|
The trailer doesn't prepare you for the third act's odd plot twist.

THE GIST
|
Sunshine is a hard one to recommend. There are a lot of interesting visuals on display, and I think hardcore Sci-Fi fans will find some
enjoyment, but the third act will ruin it for a lot of moviegoers. Your safest bet is to save it as a rental.
